In this gripping memoir, veteran smokejumper Scott Williamson shares his experiences battling wildfires from the air. From his early days as a rookie smokejumper to his harrowing assignments on some of the most destructive wildfires in recent history, Williamson's story is a testament to the courage, skill, and dedication of the men and women who fight these devastating blazes.

Williamson's journey begins in the small town of Winthrop, Washington, where he grows up with a love of the outdoors. After graduating from high school, he joins the U.S. Forest Service and is assigned to a smokejumper base in Missoula, Montana. There, he undergoes rigorous training to learn the skills he needs to jump into wildfires from airplanes and fight them on the ground.

Williamson's first assignment is to the Blackfoot Complex Fire in Montana. The fire is burning out of control, and Williamson and his crew are tasked with stopping its progress. They work long hours in dangerous conditions, but they are ultimately successful in containing the blaze.

Over the next several years, Williamson is assigned to a variety of wildfires, including the Hayman Fire in Colorado, the Biscuit Fire in Oregon, and the Station Fire in California. Each fire is different, but they all share one common element: the danger is always present.

In 2009, Williamson is assigned to the Station Fire, which quickly becomes one of the most destructive wildfires in California history. The fire burns for over two weeks and destroys over 200,000 acres of land. Williamson and his crew work tirelessly to contain the blaze, but it is ultimately too powerful. The fire rages on, destroying homes and businesses and forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

Williamson's memoir is a powerful and moving account of the life of a smokejumper. It is a story of courage, sacrifice, and dedication. It is also a story of the importance of teamwork and the bonds that are formed between those who fight wildfires together.
