Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. His journey was filled with danger and adventure, and he ultimately made many important discoveries. Magellan was born in Sabrosa, Portugal, in 1480. He began his career as a sailor at a young age, and he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1519, he was given command of a fleet of five ships by the Spanish king, Charles V. Magellan's goal was to find a westward route to the Spice Islands.

Magellan's expedition set sail from Spain in September 1519. The fleet sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and then down the coast of South America. In October 1520, the expedition entered the Strait of Magellan, a narrow passage that separates the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The passage was treacherous, and several of Magellan's ships were lost. However, Magellan and his crew persevered, and they eventually emerged into the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean was vast and unknown, and Magellan's expedition faced many challenges. The crew suffered from scurvy, and they often ran out of food and water. However, Magellan was a determined leader, and he kept his crew going. In March 1521, the expedition reached the Philippines. Magellan was killed in a battle with the local people, but his crew continued on. In September 1522, the remaining ships of the expedition returned to Spain. They had circumnavigated the globe, becoming the first people to do so.

Magellan's expedition was a major turning point in history. It proved that the world was round, and it opened up new trade routes. Magellan's discoveries also had a profound impact on European culture. His expedition inspired new ideas about the world, and it helped to spark the Age of Exploration.
