Luigi Del Bianco was an Italian immigrant who played an unsung role as the chief carver of many of New York City's most iconic buildings, including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Del Bianco was born in Valdagno, Italy, in 1854. He began his apprenticeship as a woodcarver at the age of 14. In 1870, he immigrated to the United States with his family.
Del Bianco's first job in the United States was as a carver in a furniture factory. However, he soon found work as a woodcarver on some of New York City's most prestigious buildings.
Del Bianco's work can be seen on the interiors of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, and the American Museum of Natural History. He also carved the wooden eagles that adorn the top of the Empire State Building.
Del Bianco's most famous work is the Statue of Liberty. He was responsible for carving the statue's face, hands, and feet. He also carved the wooden frame that supports the statue's copper skin.
Del Bianco's work on the Statue of Liberty was a major undertaking. He spent over two years carving the statue's face alone. The statue was completed in 1886 and dedicated in 1886.
Del Bianco's work on the Statue of Liberty is a testament to his skill as a carver. The statue is one of the most iconic symbols of the United States and is a reminder of the contributions that immigrants have made to the country.
Del Bianco died in New York City in 1924. He was 70 years old. He is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Queens.
Del Bianco's legacy lives on in the many buildings that he carved. His work is a reminder of the important role that immigrants have played in shaping the United States.
