Balch began her career as a social worker in the Boston slums. In the early 1900s, Balch became involved in the peace movement. She was a strong opponent of American imperialism, and she worked to promote international cooperation and understanding.

In 1915, Balch helped to found the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). WILPF was a pacifist organization that worked to promote peace through education, negotiation, and nonviolent resistance. Balch served as WILPF's secretary for many years, and she played a key role in the organization's growth and development.

In 1946, Balch was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work for peace. She was the second woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and she was the first American woman to receive the award.

Emily Greene Balch was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to the cause of peace. She was a pioneer in the peace movement, and she made a significant contribution to the development of international cooperation and understanding.
