Jason Epstein was a legendary editor who discovered and nurtured the careers of some of the most important writers of the 20th century, including Norman Mailer, Philip Roth, Tom Wolfe, and Joan Didion. He was also a brilliant writer in his own right, and his memoir, Eating Jason Epstein, is a fascinating and revealing look at the world of publishing and the people who make it.

Epstein was born in New York City in 1928. He attended Harvard University, where he studied English literature. After graduating, he worked for a brief time as a reporter for Time magazine. In 1952, he joined the staff of Doubleday, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming editor-in-chief in 1961.

During his time at Doubleday, Epstein published some of the most important and influential books of the 20th century, including Mailer's The Naked and the Dead, Roth's Portnoy's Complaint, Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem.

Epstein was a demanding editor, but he was also a generous and supportive mentor to his authors. He believed in the power of literature to change the world, and he was always looking for new and exciting voices.

In 1974, Epstein left Doubleday to start his own publishing house, Random House. Under his leadership, Random House became one of the most successful and respected publishers in the world.

Epstein died in 2006 at the age of 78. He left behind a legacy of great books and a deep love of literature.

Eating Jason Epstein is a fascinating and revealing look at the life and work of one of the most important figures in American publishing. It is a must-read for anyone interested in literature, publishing, or the history of ideas.
