In his new book, The Turbulent Life of Marvin Barnes: Pro Basketball's Original Renegade, author Peter Golenbock tells the story of Marvin's rise and fall. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with Marvin's family, friends, and teammates, Golenbock paints a vivid portrait of a complex and troubled man.

Marvin Barnes was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1952. From a young age, he showed a natural talent for basketball. As a teenager, he was recruited to play for the legendary DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. At DeMatha, Marvin played alongside future NBA stars Adrian Dantley and Mike Davis. Under the guidance of coach Morgan Wootten, Marvin helped lead the Stags to two national championships.

In 1974, Marvin was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the second overall pick. He was an instant sensation, averaging 22.6 points per game in his rookie season. Marvin was known for his flamboyant style of play. He was a gifted scorer who could create his own shot at will. He was also a fierce rebounder and defender.

Marvin's NBA career was a roller coaster ride. He played for seven different teams during his 10-year career. He had some great moments, but he also struggled with injuries and off-court issues. Marvin was often in the news for his antics off the court. He was known for his partying lifestyle and his outspoken personality.

In 1981, Marvin's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cocaine addiction. He was suspended from the NBA and went through rehab. But Marvin was never able to fully recover. He struggled with addiction for the rest of his life.

Marvin Barnes died in 2014 at the age of 62. He was a talented basketball player who never reached his full potential. He was a troubled man who struggled with addiction and personal demons. But he was also a beloved figure who left an indelible mark on the game of basketball.

The Turbulent Life of Marvin Barnes is a must-read for any fan of basketball history. It is a tragic story, but it is also a story of inspiration. Marvin Barnes was a flawed man, but he was also a fighter. He never gave up on his dreams, even when the odds were stacked against him.
