By Bob Fu
In 1966, when the Cultural Revolution began in China, I was just a child. My family was poor, and we lived in a small village in the countryside. The Red Guards, who were the young people who enforced the policies of the Cultural Revolution, came to our village and began to persecute Christians. My parents were both Christians, and they were forced to renounce their faith. I was too young to understand what was happening, but I could see that my parents were suffering.
In 1972, my father was arrested and sent to a labor camp. He was accused of being a counter-revolutionary. I never saw him again.
My mother was also persecuted. She was forced to work in a factory, and she was not allowed to attend church. I was left alone to care for my younger siblings.
In 1979, the Cultural Revolution finally ended. My mother was able to return to church, and I was able to start attending school. But the scars of the Cultural Revolution remained.
In 1984, I left China to study in the United States. I wanted to learn more about the world and about Christianity. I also wanted to find a way to help the people of China who were still suffering from religious persecution.
In 1990, I founded ChinaAid, a non-profit organization that provides legal aid to persecuted Christians in China. ChinaAid also works to promote religious freedom and human rights in China.
My work with ChinaAid has not been without its risks. I have been arrested and detained by the Chinese government. I have also been threatened with death. But I am not afraid. I believe that God has called me to this work, and I am determined to continue until religious freedom is a reality for all people in China.
My Long March From Mao to Now is the story of my life and my journey of faith. It is a story of suffering and persecution, but it is also a story of hope and redemption. I believe that God is working in China, and that one day religious freedom will come to the people of China.
