Early Life and Education

James Madison was born in Port Conway, Virginia, on March 16, 1751. He was the son of James Madison Sr., a planter and slave owner, and Nelly Conway Madison. Madison received a classical education at home, and he later attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He graduated in 1771 with a degree in law.

Political Career

Madison began his political career in 1776 when he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates. He quickly rose through the ranks, and he was elected to the Continental Congress in 1780. Madison played a key role in the drafting of the Articles of Confederation, and he was also a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. He helped to write the Constitution, and he was one of the main proponents of the Bill of Rights.

Madison served as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson, and he succeeded Jefferson as President in 1809. He served two terms, and he is best known for his role in the War of 1812. Madison led the United States to victory in the war, and he helped to establish the nation as a major world power.

Later Life

Madison retired from public life after his presidency, and he lived in Montpelier, Virginia, until his death in 1836. He is buried at Montpelier, and his home is now a museum.
