What is a revolution? How does it happen? And what are its consequences? These are questions that have fascinated scholars for centuries. In recent years, anthropologists have made significant contributions to our understanding of revolution. They have shown that revolutions are not simply moments of upheaval, but rather complex and protracted processes that involve the forging of new time, people, and worlds.

Anthropologies of Revolution brings together leading scholars from anthropology, history, and other disciplines to offer a comprehensive overview of the field of revolutionary studies. The book explores the diverse ways that people have made and remade their worlds through revolutionary action. It examines the role of culture, power, resistance, agency, violence, identity, memory, time, space, and world-making in revolutionary processes.

The book is divided into three parts.

  • Part I: Forging Time examines the ways that revolutionaries have created new temporal Free Downloads.   • Part II: Forging People examines the ways that revolutions have created new forms of human subjectivity. This section explores the role of revolutionary violence in the creation of new revolutionary identities, the ways that revolutionaries have sought to create new forms of community, and the challenges that revolutionaries have faced in forging new forms of social equality.
  • Part III: Forging Worlds examines the ways that revolutions have created new social and political Free Downloads. This section explores the role of revolution in the creation of new states, the ways that revolutionaries have sought to create new forms of economic and political organization, and the challenges that revolutionaries have faced in forging new forms of global Free Download.

    Author Biographies

    David Nugent is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of Modernity at the Edge of Empire: State, Individual, and Nation in the Northern Peruvian Andes, 1830–1930 and Consumed by Place: The Politics of Representation in Andean Ecuador.

    Anand Vivek Taneja is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of Gandhi's Children: Rethinking Childhood in Contemporary India and The Politics of Purity: Caste, Religion, and Power in Northern India.
